The Farmgirl Next Door Thursday, January 2, Thanks to Colin for the reminder, I've resolved to commit myself to this blogging project in , and so I'll start with an update on my last post. The asparagus season was a great success, but it was incredibly physically demanding hence the absence of any new posts, or returned phone calls, and so on. Brendan and I put in about ten to twelve hours a day for four weeks straight, running the whole show ourselves. It was a tough go but by the end of it we were fit, and happy, and healthy, and tanned.
How Much Does it Cost to Run a Small Farm?

I have been madly flipping through my seed catalog trying to figure out what strain of seeds I want to plant, what vegetables will make the cut and where everything will go in the garden this year. There are limits I must abide by. Financially as well as historically remember, I am working on a farm where we base everything on techniques, animals and plants available to the area from — But, I think Bossman might give me some leeway. Perhaps not as much as I would like. I have pined over some of the more exotic plants like the purple cauliflowers, yellow beans and so much more. Time will tell just how much I will be able to plant this year.

There are approximately 48 left in the refrigerator. Over the past weekend we celebrated Fall Harvest on the farm. The last hurrah before the long winter months. A chance for us to show off the old saw mill, turn on the apple press, use our corn shelling equipment and much more so the public could enjoy a fun day on the farm and children could learn a bit about what happens before food reaches the grocery store. Well, we did do all that!
One subversion of the classic setup has the farmer allow the salesman to spend the night on the condition that he not sleep with the farmer's only son, to which the salesman replies " Oops, I think I'm in the wrong joke. She also turns out to be part of a family of inbred cannibal hicks. Maggie from The Walking Dead certainly qualifies, being the daughter of traditional farmer Hershel Greene. Husk from X-Men is actually a coal-miner's daughter.
